Hi, I'm Karl, a mechanical engineer! In 1994, at the age of 17, I bought my first car, a Datsun 1600 rally car. Rallying in the Victorian Club Rally Series, the passion, commitment and spending grew. Then along came an enthusiastic and visionary navigator, Kris, who thought "we can go faster in a VR4". He slapped down a wad of cash and hey presto, we were 4wd turbo! After the first stage, it was love. The grip and the power were amazing! We had epic battles with Legacys, WRXs and Evos. We did Rally of Melbourne twice, and even raced past Possum Bourne's destroyed WRC car at the top of Mount Donna Buang Rd. But, after about 15 events in a very unique car, the harsh reality of laying $100 notes end to end down each stage became too much. The engineer in me said "let's try the cheaper front wheel drive"! So, I did a ground up build of a 1991 AE93 Toyota Corolla GTI. That got raced in Rally SA and some other events before working away and family suppressed the need for adrenalin.
Fast forward to 2019. Queensland. With 3 boys aged 9, 7, and 5, there needed to be some way to create father son connections that would last a lifetime. As luck would have it, 10 minutes from our house in Moreton Bay, was Lakeside Raceway. I headed along with Mika, my eldest boy, to check out the four stroke go karting. And just there I found it! The perfect way to get back into motorsport. 3 go karts, 2 championships, a hand-built service trailer later, 3 kids driving, we are living the dream! Only four years left until Mika can rooster tail some rocks out on the stages.
Why photography? From my very first event, the one thing everyone wanted was photos of themselves sideways around a corner showering rocks into the countryside. At the end of the day, as a driver you want to be able to say to your family, your mates, work mates, or people who don't even care... "Look what I did! Look how high I jumped. Look how far off the road I went!". I feel it is my duty to provide that photo. From developing black and white photos in my parent's bathroom back in the 90's, advances in technology have made taking photos and getting them too you so much more convenient! My aim is to have photos you can buy within hours of finishing an event! If I can make you smile that "Look what I did" smile, my job is done! See you out on the gravel, track or circuit!
